Injury is the second most common cause of mortality in children; however, child abuse is underreported and underdiagnosed, and even less known is the contribution of unintentional injuries. Lack of prevention practices affects the injury burden in pediatric populations. The objective of this study is to describe the characteristics and outcomes of injury in children presenting to a Pediatric Emergency Department (PED). A retrospective analysis of patients who presented to a single PED during 2012 was conducted. The main outcome was the incidence and type of injuries. The descriptive analysis was performed to determine the main characteristics of the injuries and the outcome of the population. All the data were obtained from the hospital’s database and included in the number of injuries registered over the same period. From the 38718 visits to the PED during 2012, 57.2% (n = 22626) of the patients were children. In total, 18285 injuries were reported; 42.9% were unintentional injuries and 57.1% were intentional. There were a total of 955 closed head injuries (CHI) in children, with a male predominance. The most common injuries were contusions (57.7%), followed by lacerations (34.7%) and abrasions (13.3%). The major mechanisms involved were accidents (27.3%), followed by sports injuries (22.7%). The overall mortality was 0.62%; the mechanism of injury was unintentional in 84.7% of cases and intentional in 15.3%. In the unintentional injury group, the mortality was higher among subjects aged 1-9 (0.85%) than children aged 10-18 (0.06%), and the principal mechanisms were accidental falls (27.0%) and burns (18.3%). The overall incidence of injury was higher in males than in females, and intentional injury in young children was a public health concern. In this population, unintentional injury represents the main cause of death. Most of the
