The GMB and TGWU are calling for a comprehensive ban.

Union official John Byrne said: „The Government should take the step of banning the use of wildcat strikes. It is absurd to allow companies to use workers‘ regular pay and conditions to entrench scabs and scabs have no rights at all. The current system doesn’t work, it’s unfair and dysfunctional.

„The Government needs to ban wildcat strikes and enforce a ban with proper legislation.“

In a bid to end wildcat strikes, the government, trade unions and employers pledged last month to bring forward a package of proposals to make it more difficult for companies to strike.

The proposals will form the basis of the long-overdue reform of the law on strikes, and are likely to be considered by the high-profile finance, energy and climate change committee next week.

The unions which support the move are the GMB and Unite, along with the European Trade Union Confederation. A spokesmen for the CBI said its member companies had a „strong interest“ in striking ban.

However, the CBI has already expressed its opposition to the move.
