The 18-year-old from Killara in Sydney has won Australia’s first medal in women’s slalom at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Leyman won the race by half a second from her nearest rival.

„This is phenomenal. It’s such an amazing feeling,“ Leyman said.

The youngster now has the lead in the championship race and she is favourite to go all the way.

„I’m going to go try to ski my best and whatever happens happens,“ she said.

„We have four more days.“

Leyman is the only Australian female in the slalom and she went into the competition as Australia’s best hope after a dismal run of results in the opening games.

She is the 14th Winter Olympian in Australia, the country’s highest total at the Games.

Leyman has already a rich legacy of gold, silver and bronze medals on the World Cup circuit and last year competed at the World Championships in Schladming, Austria, where she finished ninth in the overall World Cup slalom standings.

She won silver at the last World Cup race in Melbourne and now looks set to end her career with a couple more medals.

She will compete in the next World Cup race in Bormio, Italy, in January.

„I think the form is just coming together now,“ Leyman said.

Leyman won’t be able to choose her uniform for the final medal race because Australia’s Olympic uniform regulations are not yet in place.

Uniforms for the Australian Olympic team will be revealed on Thursday.

Not first appearance in slalom

Leyman was only the third Australian to compete in the women’s slalom, with the previous Australians to do so being Sally Pearson in 1992 and 2004.

The last Australian to score an Olympic slalom victory was Shani Davis at the 2010 Games in Vancouver.

American Kaya Turski is the slalom skiing world champion, but Leyman is a clear favourite ahead of the home Games.
